I am directing a new play by a very talented ex-student of mine, James Butler, for one performance only as part of this year's One Act Play Festival at the Tabard Theatre, on the evening of 12 April at 7.30.
It's a Restoration romp set in 1702; I would pitch it as Blackadder meets Peter Barnes by way of the language of Howard Barker .
"It is 1702. Inside 'The Whistling Whistle', a coffeehouse in Drury Lane, a play unlike any other is being rehearsed. The players themselves lay slumped against walls or over tables, fussed over by a benevolent mother and spat at by their brutal director. Welcome to the first offence of a brave, new species of theatre. Take your seats!"
James Butler graduated from Middlesex University in 2006 with a First Class Creative Writing degree, also winning the Suzanna Gladwin award for Creative Writing. He was a finalist in the BBC sitcom writing competition, Last Laugh, which was shown on BBC3 in April 2006. Histrionics is his first full-length play.
Cast: Daniela Finley, Sean Garvey, Paul L. Martin, Chris Niederberger, David Shuker & Brendan Wyer.
